Curriculum

At Shaftesbury Junior School we believe in the concept of lifelong learning and the idea that both adults and children learn new things every day. We maintain that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone; it should be fun. Through our teaching we equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their lives. We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences help children to lead happy and rewarding lives.

We have considered carefully the local context for our curriculum and have made choices based on the needs of our children and community. We believe that our curriculum is wider than the National Curriculum and have developed a more joined-up curriculum for our pupils.

We teach foundation subjects such as History, Geography, Art and DT, through our connected curriculum. Each half term, children look at a different topic and explore it, using the key skills that are needed for each foundation subject. Here are the topics that year groups will cover this academic year.

Reading is a key priority for us and we aim to develop reading skills with our pupils in order to improve their life chances, provide them with life skills and to promote reading for pleasure and enjoyment.  For the development of early reading, we use the Read Write Inc phonics programme.
